Dr. Warren Brown

Biography

Warren Brown is a professor of history at the California Institute of Technology. He earned his B.S. from Tufts University in 1985, followed by an M.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1993, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1997. His academic career at Caltech began as an assistant professor from 1997 to 2003, and he has held the positions of associate professor from 2003 to 2010 and professor since then. Brown's research primarily focuses on social and political history during the early medieval period in Europe, particularly the use of written documents by lay people in their interactions with churches and monasteries. This interest extends to the study of documentary culture and conflict resolution in historical contexts. His work has been recognized with various awards, including the Caltech HSS Division Brass Teaching Award in 2018 and the Donald Bullough Fellowship at the Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of St. Andrews in 2013. In 2023, Brown published a noteworthy book that examines the lives of ordinary individuals in the European Middle Ages, contributing significantly to the understanding of this historical era.
