Biography

Warren S. Pear, M.D., Ph.D. is the Gaylord P. Mary Louise Harnwell Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Division of Cancer Immunobiology. His research focuses on the processes leading to the development and differentiation of mature hematopoietic cells from single hematopoietic stem cells, particularly examining the perturbations causing leukemia. Pear's main interest lies in the role of Notch proteins in regulating hematopoietic cell fate decisions in cancer. By employing various in vitro and in vivo approaches, his lab has shown Notch proteins to be key regulators of multiple hematopoietic cell fates, including T cell lineage establishment. He is working on identifying signaling pathways that control hematopoiesis and understanding how dysregulation of Notch signaling can lead to leukemia. Pear has also developed mouse models to study Notch-related leukemia and is utilizing gene array bioinformatics to identify transcriptional targets that mediate the effects of Notch signaling on normal development and leukemia.
