Warren Prell is the Henry L. Doherty Professor Emeritus of Oceanography at Brown University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hanover College in 1966 and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1974. He began his academic career at Brown in 1975 and was promoted to full professor in 1989. His research focuses on global-scale paleoceanography and local-scale estuarine oceanography. He has conducted significant studies on the paleoceanographic evolution of the Cenozoic climate-ocean system, examining the interplay of tectonic forces and climate evolution. Recent work has explored carbon and nitrogen cycling in Narragansett Bay, addressing critical environmental changes in the region. Prell has published extensively on these topics and has collaborated with various institutions and researchers to enhance understanding of estuarine dynamics and historical climate interactions. His work has been supported by several grants, including from NOAA. He is an elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and has served on multiple advisory boards and review committees throughout his career. As an instructor, he teaches courses in oceanography, contributing to the education of future scientists in the field.
