Biography

Waruna Kulatilaka is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He serves as the Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Programs and holds the Holdredge/Paul Professorship. Dr. Kulatilaka completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in 2006, and has significant academic and research contributions in the fields of optical diagnostics imaging, laser spectroscopy, and ultrafast lasers. He focuses on combustion energy conversion and hypersonics, and is involved in research surrounding high-speed propulsion and propellants energetics. His work includes advanced expertise in extreme materials, remote sensing, fluid flow, and plasma diagnostics. He has received several awards for his work, including the Chancellor Enhancing Development Generating Excellence Scholarship Fellow title and the Walker Outstanding Service Award. Additionally, Kulatilaka has been recognized as a Senior Member of the Optical Society and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has contributed to the academic community through various invited talks, including at the Gordon Research Conference on Laser Diagnostics for Combustion. He is dedicated to engineering education and actively engages in mentoring students and contributing to their learning experience.
