Dr. Wayan Arka

Biography

Wayan Arka's contributions to linguistics span various sub-disciplines including theoretical, formal, computational grammar, typology, and documentary linguistics. His research engages with international collaborations across institutions in Australia, Indonesia, the UK, Japan, Germany, and New Zealand, focusing on producing precise, empirically motivated descriptions and analyses pertinent to the theoretical and practical significance of grammar. Arka's expertise is particularly concentrated on numerous diverse languages of Indonesia, where his theoretical work is framed within the Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) framework. He has implemented LFG for Indonesian languages, tackling challenges and developing LFG-based computational grammar. His extensive fieldwork in Indonesia has supported language culture documentation and advocacy for minority language communities. Recent projects include significant funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), illustrating his active research agenda. He has held various academic positions at the Australian National University including Head of the Linguistics Program, and has earned prestigious fellowships recognizing his contributions, notably as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of Humanities. Arka's educational qualifications include a Master’s in Applied Linguistics and a PhD in Linguistics, both from the University of Sydney, equipping him to integrate contemporary research into his teaching.
