Dr. Wayne Book

Biography

Wayne J. Book began his academic career at Georgia Tech in 1974 as an Assistant Professor and has since maintained a longstanding interest in robotics and automatic controls. He contributed to the establishment of the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems (CIMS) Program at Georgia Tech, serving as its founding director from 1983 to 1988. In 2001, he was appointed the HUSCO/Ramirez Distinguished Chair in Fluid Power Motion Control, shortly establishing the Georgia Tech Fluid Power Motion Control Center. After retiring in June 2011, he was granted emeritus status and has continued to engage in research. His research interests span automation, mechatronics, acoustics, dynamics, and robotics. Book's work includes significant contributions to the design and control of flexible motion systems, aided through support from entities like NASA and the National Science Foundation. He is known for leading collaborative initiatives involving the creation of haptic displays called Digital Clay, which explore applications in various fields such as virtual reality and computer-assisted surgery. Throughout his career, Book has received numerous awards and distinctions reflecting his leadership and contributions to engineering education and research.
