Biography

Wayne S.R. Chen is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. His research interests focus on understanding the structure-function relationships and physiological roles of calcium release channels, particularly the ryanodine receptor (RyR), in cardiac function. His current research directions explore the molecular and cellular basis of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. He is particularly involved in studying the molecular actions of pro- and anti-arrhythmic drugs, developing novel anti-arrhythmic therapies, and elucidating the molecular mechanisms of RyR activation by cytoplasmic and luminal calcium. Dr. Chen employs a variety of advanced techniques in his research, including site-directed mutagenesis, single-channel recordings using planar lipid bilayers, fluorescence Ca2+ imaging, and biochemical and structural studies via cryo-electron microscopy and gene targeting in mice.
