Wayne Hendrickson is a University Professor and the Violin Family Professor at Columbia University in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics. He is also the Scientific Director at the New York Structural Biology Center. Hendrickson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics and Biology from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls, before obtaining his PhD in Biophysics from Johns Hopkins University. Joining the Columbia faculty in 1984, he has specialized in x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, and biochemical cellular analyses to study biomolecular properties at atomic detail. His research focuses on structural biology, methodology development, and biophysical principles related to macromolecular structure and biological activity. Hendrickson's current research includes anomalous scattering studies of macromolecular structure, aimed at enhancing methods for analysis, particularly those involving multiwavelength anomalous diffraction (MAD). He has been recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the Ewald Prize from the International Union of Crystallography in 2023 and the Canada Gairdner International Award in 2003. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the National Academy of Sciences.
