Biography

Wei-Cheng Lin specializes in the history of Chinese art and architecture with a focus on medieval periods. His primary research interests concern issues of visual material culture, Buddhist art, architecture, and China’s funerary practices throughout history. He is the author of "Building Sacred Mountain: Buddhist Architecture in China’s Mount Wutai" (University of Washington Press, 2014) and has published on a variety of topics such as collecting history, photography, architecture, historiography of Chinese architectural history, and contemporary Chinese art. Lin is currently engaged in several book projects: one titled "Performative Architecture in China" which explores the performative potential of architecture and its historical meanings, and another called "Necessarily Incomplete: Fragments of Chinese Artifacts" which investigates the significance of overlooked artifacts. He serves on the steering committee of the Center for Art in East Asia and has worked closely with the University of Chicago Center in Beijing on art exhibitions, conferences, and publications. Additionally, Lin is the Faculty Director of the Dispersed Chinese Art Digitalization Project (DCADP), a digital humanities initiative supported by the Cyrus Tang Foundation, where he manages publication series related to East Asian art and artifacts.
