Wei Mi obtained his PhD degree in structural biology from Peking University, Beijing, China. He became fascinated with structures of membrane proteins and subsequently received postdoctoral training at Purdue University, University of Washington, and Harvard Medical School (HMS). At HMS, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Maofu Liao, where he employed single particle cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) to determine the structures of ATP-binding cassette transporters within lipid bilayer environments. In 2019, Dr. Mi joined the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University School of Medicine, focusing his research on dissecting the mechanisms of membrane proteins involved in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) synthesis regulation through genetic, biochemical, and structural approaches. His work addresses antibiotic resistance, particularly in Gram-negative bacteria, which present unique challenges compared to Gram-positive bacteria due to their distinct outer membrane structures and lipid compositions. By exploring the biogenesis of LPS and its regulation, Mi aims to identify novel targets for the development of antibiotics to combat bacterial viability issues.
