Biography

Wei Qiu is a Professor in the Department of Ocean Naval Architectural Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He obtained his B.Eng. and M.A.Sc. from Dalian University of Technology in China, followed by a PhD in marine hydrodynamics from Dalhousie University in 2001. Prior to joining Memorial University in 2004 as an Assistant Professor, he worked at Martec Limited as a senior hydrodynamicist and product manager for seakeeping software. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007 and became a Professor in 2013. His research focuses on marine hydrodynamics, specifically applications to ships and offshore structures, with expertise in fluid-structure interaction using experimental and numerical methods, including computational fluid dynamics and potential-flow-based methods. Qiu has worked on numerous projects in the marine offshore industry and has published extensively in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He holds several patents and has developed software packages utilized in the marine offshore industry. He is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Qiu has served as a Chair of the ITTC Ocean Engineering Committee and is currently the Regional Vice President (Atlantic North) for SNAME. He was the chair of the 34th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering in 2015.
