Biography

Wei Shi is a full professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Laval University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Silicon Photonics. His team has been pioneering numerous groundbreaking advances in integrated photonics and high-capacity optical communication systems. Currently, his research focuses on large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and their integration with electronic integrated circuits, aiming to revolutionize AI and next-generation quantum systems. Professor Shi has led several significant projects, including the HiLight project, a $8M initiative aimed at developing hybrid photonic integration. In 2019, he co-founded EHVA Photonics, specializing in comprehensive solutions for testing photonic chips and data intelligence, which was later acquired by EXFO Inc., a global leader in photonic testing equipment. As a member of the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL), Professor Shi leads the research axis on photonic systems and microsystems. He is a senior member of the IEEE and Optica societies.
