Weiming Yao is an Assistant Professor in the Photonic Integration research group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His key field of expertise is high-speed optical components and semiconductor lasers utilized in high-density photonic integrated circuits (PICs). He is currently working on methods to closely connect photonic circuits with electronics to further enhance the speed and density of PICs. Additionally, he has developed an interest in neuromorphic photonics, exploring the potential of building neural networks within photonic circuits. Such developments in photonic integrated circuits enable high-density integration of energy-efficient and high-speed optical components, allowing for new applications that could benefit from this enabling technology. Yao obtained his dual Master’s degree in Photonic Networks Engineering from Aston University in the UK and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Italy in 2012. His Master’s thesis focused on optical signal processing in fiber, carried out at Osaka University in Japan. He conducted his PhD research at TU/e, exploring high-capacity, high-density integrated optical transmitters, which culminated in his PhD degree in 2017. Following this, he continued his work at TU/e as a researcher in photonic integrated circuits, boasting a strong background in photonic networks and devices, with a specific focus on the integration of high-speed and high-density components in connection with electronics.
Specific departments like Industrial Design require a portfolio. Programs like Data Science and AI require a GRE-General test for certain international backgrounds.
