Biography

Weiyu Zhang is a Provost's Chair Professor and Director of the Civic Tech Lab at the Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore. His research focuses on civic engagement through Information Communication Technologies, with an emphasis on Asia. He has led multi-nation projects on youth engagement, online deliberation, and civic technology in Asia. His current interests include developing and examining civic tech applications that facilitate citizen deliberation on pressing topics such as artificial intelligence, Covid-19 vaccines, climate change, and novel food. He authored the book 'The Internet and New Social Formation in China: Fandom, Publics and Civic Engagement' (Routledge, 2016) and has published articles in journals including Journal of Communication, Theory, Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Information, Communication, & Society, New Media & Society, Computers & Education, and Public Understanding of Science, among others. With over 30 years of experience in the digital age, Zhang’s work delves into China's online fandom and civic tech for education.
