Professor Dr. Wendell Pritchett

Biography

Wendell Pritchett is the James S. Riepe Presidential Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and has a distinguished career in academia and public service. He served as Interim University President from February to June 2022, and as University Provost from July 2017 to December 2021. Pritchett joined the Penn Law faculty in 2002 and has held various leadership roles, including Interim Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. His research focuses on the development of post-war urban policy, particularly in urban renewal, housing finance, and housing discrimination. Pritchett has also specialized in real estate and housing law, representing nonprofit organizations involved in the development of affordable housing. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania, a JD from Yale University, and a BA from Brown University. His influential books and articles explore urban history and policy, especially regarding housing, race relations, and economic development. Notable works include 'Brownsville, Brooklyn: Blacks, Jews and the Changing Face of the Ghetto' and 'Robert Clifton Weaver: American City,' and he co-edited 'Perspectives on Fair Housing.'
