Wendy Barclay joined Imperial College in 2007, previously conducting her research at the University of Reading since 1995. She graduated in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, completing her PhD at the Common Cold Unit in Salisbury. Under the joint supervision of Dr. David Tyrrell and Dr. Fred Brown, she studied the human immune response to rhinovirus. Barclay gained molecular virology skills as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratories of Professor Jeff Almond at Reading, and also worked with Dr. Peter Palese at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Her expertise lies in respiratory viruses, particularly influenza viruses. Her studies aim to understand the molecular and cellular basis of pathogenesis, host range restrictions, and the transmissibility of influenza viruses using recombinant viruses with defined mutations. Her work has contributed to the production of novel influenza pandemic vaccines, employing relevant cell and animal models. Barclay's laboratory is funded by the MRC, BBSRC, and the Wellcome Trust, alongside commercial bodies, focusing on translational aspects such as the analysis of antiviral compounds and the characterization of novel cell substrates for attenuated virus backbones in influenza vaccines.
