Biography

Wendy Bottero studied Social Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge and completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh. She has held academic positions at the University of Abertay in Dundee and the University of Southampton before joining the University of Manchester in January 2006, where she served as Head of Sociology from 2013 to 2016. Her research focuses on social hierarchies and inequalities, particularly how personal ties and social connections shape societal structures. She employs innovative methods to map these hierarchies and theorizes the interplay between social ties and the visibility of inequality. Wendy's work includes significant contributions to the understanding of stratification, social mobility, and cultural inequalities, as well as exploration of cultural practices in relation to sociology, music, and family history. Her forthcoming book 'A Sense of Inequality', published by Rowman & Littlefield, further extends her research on theorizing subjectivities related to inequality.
