Biography

Wendy Hui Kyong Chun is a Professor and Canada 150 Research Chair at Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication. As the director of the Digital Democracies Institute, she leads the Mellon-funded Data Fluencies Project which aims to merge interpretive traditions in the arts and humanities with vital issues surrounding STEM, aiming to express, imagine, and create innovative engagements in an increasingly data-filled world. Chun's academic background includes a PhD from 1999 and an MA from 1994, both focusing on Systems Design Engineering and English Literature. She has authored several significant texts in new media studies, including "Control and Freedom: Power and Paranoia in the Age of Fiber Optics" (MIT Press, 2006), "Programmed Visions: Software Memory" (2011), and "Updating the Remain Habitual New Media" (2016). Her research interests center on the intersection between technological artifacts and cultural formations, particularly how control technologies influence mass media and the conceptualization of memory throughout various fields. Chun has held prestigious fellowships, including as a Guggenheim Fellow, and has been involved in multiple interdisciplinary initiatives aimed at addressing significant social issues such as online misinformation and discriminatory algorithms.
