Wendy Dankers is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Rheumatology Research Group in the Department of Medicine at Monash University. She specializes in studying the role of glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper (GILZ) in autoimmune diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis. Wendy obtained her MSc degree from the University of Twente in the Netherlands, focusing on generating induced pluripotent stem cells from human fibroblasts, before completing her PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam under A/Prof. Erik Lubberts and Prof. Mieke Hazes, where she researched the effect of vitamin D on T helper-17 cells in the context of rheumatoid arthritis. Her academic journey included a significant period at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, USA, where she gained expertise in chromatin immunoprecipitation and next-generation sequencing. Since joining Monash University, she has been involved in exploring the molecular mechanisms by which GILZ suppresses autoimmunity, utilizing a variety of research methods including in vitro culture systems and experimental lupus models.
