Biography

Wendy Flavell is Emerita Professor in the Photon Physics Group at the University of Manchester, specializing in surface physics. She has served as the Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science and Engineering from 2018 to 2021 and has held positions such as Deputy Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy until her retirement in 2022. Wendy was appointed Chair at UMIST in 1998, becoming the sixth woman in the UK to achieve the Chair in Physics. Flavell actively contributed to national research assessments and served on various UK research council committees. Her expertise involves electronic structure studies of complex metal oxides for applications in solar cells and photocatalysts, employing techniques like resonant photoemission and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. She has supervised 43 PhD students to date and her current research interests focus on the degradation and passivation in inorganic perovskites. Wendy was awarded the Riviere Prize by the UK Surface Analysis Forum in 2021 and has been recognized as a Spiers Memorial Lecturer in 2022. Additionally, she plays a pivotal role in the scientific community through her involvement with institutions and research initiatives.
