Biography

Following a long and distinguished career as an opera and concert singer, Wendy Nielsen is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in Voice Opera Studies. In addition to her academic role, she serves as the Head Vocal Consultant for the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio Program. Ms. Nielsen made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Fiordiligi in Mozart's 'Cosi fan tutte' in 1996 and has subsequently performed numerous roles including the Countess in 'Nozze di Figaro', Donna Elvira in 'Don Giovanni', and Micaela in 'Carmen'. Throughout her career, she has undertook roles such as Tosca, Ariadne, and Vitellia in 'Clemenza di Tito', and Samuel Barber's 'Vanessa', performing worldwide with various opera companies and orchestras. She has collaborated with renowned conductors including James Levine, Kurt Masur, and Charles Dutoit. In 1994, she became the Artistic Director of the St Andrew’s Summer Opera Workshop, significantly enhancing its reputation. A dedicated arts advocate, Nielsen has participated in numerous national boards and was the Debut Atlantic chair for several years.
