Biography

Wendy D. Roth is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research primarily focuses on social processes that challenge racial and ethnic boundaries and transform classification systems, which significantly influence conceptions of the nature of race. In her book, Race Migrations: Latinos Cultural Transformation Race, published by Stanford University Press in 2012, she explores how immigration alters cultural concepts of race within the context of migrant-host society interactions. Currently, her work delves into the impacts of genetic ancestry testing on racial and ethnic identities, as well as how these factors shape racial attitudes and interactions. Throughout her career, she has received several accolades for her research, including the 2007 American Sociological Association Outstanding Dissertation Award, the 2011 Oliver Cromwell Cox Article Award from the ASA Section on Racial and Ethnic Minorities, the 2016 Canadian Sociological Association Early Career Scholar Award, and the 2017 Killam Faculty Research Fellowship. Roth has also served as Chair of the ASA Section on Racial and Ethnic Minorities.
