Biography

Wendy Steiner is the Richard L. Fisher Professor Emerita of English at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her B.A. at McGill University and her Ph.D. at Yale University. Her teaching focuses on 20th- and 21st-century literature and critical theory, where she specializes in the interrelations between visual and verbal art. Professor Steiner is the author of several notable works, including 'Scandal and Pleasure: Art in the Age of Fundamentalism,' which was recognized among the 'New York 100 Books of 1996,' and 'Venus Exiled: Rejection of Beauty in 20th-Century Art' (2001), as well as 'The Real Thing: Model, Mirror, Art' (2010). She has received prestigious awards from the Guggenheim and Mellon Foundations and her cultural reviews have appeared in various U.S. and British periodicals, including the New York and London Review of Books. Additionally, she has held significant roles at Penn, such as Chair of the English Department and Founding Director of the Penn Humanities Forum. She also directed the King's College Program in London and has written opera librettos, with her latest work, 'Loathly Lady,' premiering at the Irvine Auditorium in 2009.
