Prof. Wenwen Fang's research specializes in extracting and isolating bio-based polymers such as cellulose and proteins from renewable feedstocks and waste streams. Her goal is to develop sustainable processes for converting these materials into high-performance fibers and functional materials. By controlling molecular interactions through chemical and physical methods, she aims to tailor the structural and mechanical properties of bio-based materials, thereby pushing the boundaries of what is currently achievable with bio-based polymers. Prof. Fang studied Chemical Engineering at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. She completed her doctorate in Material Science at Aalto University, Finland in 2018 and undertook postdoctoral research at Freiburg University, Germany before returning to Aalto University in 2020 to support the transition of Ioncell® fiber spinning technology from lab to pilot scale. In 2022, she was appointed as a staff scientist at Aalto University and in September 2024, she joined the Technical University of Munich.
