Biography

Wenzel Jakob completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Cornell University under the supervision of Steve Marschner. Before joining EPFL, he was a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at ETH Zürich's Interactive Geometry Lab, working with Olga Sorkine-Hornung. His research interests focus on Inverse Graphics, Appearance Modeling, and Physically Based Rendering methods. He leads the Realistic Graphics Lab at EPFL and is recognized for developing the Mitsuba renderer, a research-oriented rendering system. Wenzel's contributions to the field include creating widely used open-source frameworks such as pybind11, Instant Meshes, NanoGUI, nanobind, and Enoki. He has received prestigious accolades such as the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant Researcher Award and the Eurographics Young Researcher Award, as well as an ERC Starting Grant. His work revolves around enabling efficient rendering algorithms and exploring connections between physically realistic inverse graphics and various scientific applications. Besides his research, he teaches Computer Science and Communication Systems, supervising PhD students in these areas.
