Biography

Wesam Hassan is an anthropologist and medical doctor whose work lies at the intersection of medical and economic anthropology. Currently, he is a Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Postdoctoral Affiliate at the University of Oxford. His doctoral research focused on how people navigate uncertainty, risk, and temporality in the context of economic and moral crises. He completed his DPhil in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford, where he conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Turkey on gambling, cryptocurrency trading, and state-regulated games of chance. His research traced the roles of speculative practices and digital markets in shaping moral economies, class formation, and political imagination amid economic volatility. In addition to his academic credentials, he has over a decade of experience in public health and humanitarian sectors, leading research interventions with the United Nations, Johns Hopkins University, and various international NGOs in the Middle East and North Africa. His interdisciplinary background as both a physician and anthropologist informs his focus on the impact of health, economy, and technology on people's wellbeing and welfare.
