Biography

The Bailis lab aims to understand how metabolism underlies immunological diseases, controlling the biochemistry of cells and tissues using in vitro and in vivo CRISPR engineering of primary human and mouse immune cells. The long-term goal is to develop novel dietary metabolite-based therapies. The work focuses on several major areas: investigating how spatial compartmentalization of metabolism regulates immune cell state, exploring the biochemical state control of immune cell signaling, and examining how inborn errors of metabolism impact the immune system. The lab takes advantage of organelle tagging technologies to purify immune cell nuclei and study how biochemical partitioning influences cell programming and disease outcomes. Additionally, the lab actively evaluates how metabolic signaling affects immune cell function and works closely with patients at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to improve understanding of immune dysfunction caused by inborn errors of metabolism.
