Whitney Thurman has focused her nursing career on improving access to quality primary behavioral healthcare for patients at Federally Qualified Health Centers in Texas. She received her Master of Science in Nursing in 2007 and her PhD in 2018 from the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. Before joining the tenure-track faculty at UT Austin, she spent several years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Health Outcomes Division at the UT College of Pharmacy. Dr. Thurman is a member of the 4th cohort of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators. Her work aims to support community-led, community-based solutions that improve health and housing outcomes for adults with disabling health conditions and those with lived experiences of homelessness. Her research addresses critical issues faced by people with disabilities, who are often disproportionately represented in homeless populations due to a lack of accessible healthcare, housing, and educational systems. Through community-engaged, participatory research methods, Dr. Thurman seeks to develop practice and policy solutions that overcome barriers to person-centered, community-based health services. Committed to preparing the future nursing workforce, she provides diverse, community-based research experiences to facilitate the development of future nurse scientists and teaches courses such as Public Health Nursing Theory and Disability Life Course while mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.
