Biography

Whitney Trettien is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania and the Faculty Director of the Price Lab for Digital Humanities. Her research focuses on the history of book and text technologies, examining the intersections between print and digital media. In her 2021 book, "Cut/Copy/Paste," published by the University of Minnesota Press, Trettien investigates the fringes of the London print trade, revealing the collaborative nature of creating radical publications. Her work aims to revive long-forgotten objects through meticulously curated digital resources, emphasizing the relevance of historical book-making practices to contemporary digital scholarship. She is currently engaged in a project exploring the early histories of computing with a focus on printing technologies that have significantly influenced textual encoding. Trettien's scholarship has appeared in various prestigious journals including PMLA and Digital Humanities Quarterly, showcasing her contributions to the fields of book history and digital humanities.
