Dr. Wiebe Bijker

Biography

Wiebe E. Bijker is a professor at Maastricht University specializing in Technology and Society. He holds a PhD in the sociology and history of technology from the University of Twente and has a background in engineering applied physics from Delft University of Technology and philosophy from the Universities of Amsterdam and Groningen. Over his career, Bijker has been an influential figure in the Science and Technology Studies (STS) movement, contributing to the understanding of the relationship between technology, society, and scientific knowledge. His research interests include the social construction of technology, public health policies, and the impacts of nanotechnologies and biotechnologies on society. He served as the President of the Society for Social Studies of Science and played significant roles in various research and educational initiatives related to technology studies, including the creation of the European Association of Science and Technology and the establishment of a master's program in Cultures Arts, Science, and Technology (CAST). Bijker has also been involved in advisory roles, including chairing committees related to health and technology risks. He has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to the field, including the J.D. Bernal Award and the Leonardo da Vinci Medal.
