Biography

Wiebke Denecke is the S. C. Fang Professor of Chinese Language and Culture at MIT, specializing in East Asian Literatures. Her research encompasses classical literatures and philosophical traditions from China, Japan, and Korea, focusing on comparative studies within the East Asian premodern world. Trained in Sinology, Japanology, and Korean studies, Denecke has a BA and MA from the University of Göttingen and a PhD from Harvard University. Prior to joining MIT, she held positions at Barnard College/Columbia University and Boston University, as well as visiting professor roles at Dōshisha University in Kyoto and Korea University in Seoul. Denecke co-edited The Norton Anthology of World Literature and curates the East Asian Comparative Literature and Culture book series at Brill Publishers. She is also the founding editor-in-chief of the Hsu-Tang Library of Classical Chinese Literature, initiated to reinvigorate humanistic learning by expanding the geographical and temporal scope of humanistic disciplines. Her recent publications, including The Dynamics of Masters Literature and Classical World Literatures, explore the formative influences of literature across cultures and the historical complexities of literary traditions in East Asia.
