Biography

Wijnand IJsselsteijn is a full professor in Cognition and Human-Technology Interaction at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His active research program examines the impact of media technology on human psychology, using psychological principles to improve technology design. He focuses on conceptualizing and measuring human experiences within digital environments, which includes immersive media, serious games, affective computing, and personal informatics, to enhance human learning, health, and wellbeing. IJsselsteijn has a keen interest in the relationship between data science, artificial intelligence, and psychology, working on technological innovations such as sensor-enabled mobile technologies and virtual environments. His goal is to unlock potential new technologies while respecting people's passions, worries, needs, values, and life contexts. He has an academic background in artificial intelligence and cognitive neuropsychology, holding an MSc from Utrecht University and a PhD obtained in 2004 on the topic of telepresence. He serves as scientific director of the interdisciplinary Center for Humans and Technology at TU/e, which emphasizes a people-value-centered perspective in technology understanding, engineering, and design. IJsselsteijn is a scientific board member of the Eindhoven AI Systems Institute (EAISI) and a part-time professor at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed academic papers in various journals and conferences and has (co-)edited ten volumes. His recent co-edited book 'Immersed Media: Telepresence Theory, Measurement, Technology' was published in 2015, and his work has received support from industrial, national (NWO), and EU grants.
