Biography

Wijnand W. Mijnhardt is an Emeritus Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University, where he served from 1991 to 2007 and held a personal chair in Comparative History of the Sciences and Humanities until 2019. He has held visiting professorships, including Early Modern Intellectual History at the University of California, Los Angeles. Mijnhardt has engaged in significant research initiatives, including the NWO priority program Dutch Culture in a European Context and the Getty Picart research project. Notably, he is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and has contributed to the academic community as a Senior Research Fellow at the Getty Research Institute. His publications focus on Dutch intellectual history, particularly during the Enlightenment and the Dutch Republic in the eighteenth century. Notable works include edited volumes and joint research publications exploring the development of modern knowledge society and interpretations of Dutch history. Currently, he is preparing a work on the European Enlightenment and its relation to historical figures in Amsterdam, expected in 2026.
