Biography

Wil Schilders is a Full Professor emeritus and Chair of Scientific Computing in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on numerical linear algebra, indefinite systems, model order reduction, scientific computing, discretisation techniques, boundary element methods, singularly perturbed problems, exponential fitting, uniform methods, solutions of nonlinear systems, and nonlinear variable transformations in numerical methods and the simulation of semiconductor devices and electronic circuits. With over 30 years of industrial experience, Wil emphasizes the development of novel mathematical methods to address a variety of industrial challenges. His work reflects extensive national and international industrial connections, having presided over the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) from 2010-2011 and serving as part of EU-MATHS-IN since 2016. He advocates for mathematics as a key enabling technology, highlighting its significance in both industry and society. Wil began his studies in Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy at Radboud University Nijmegen where he obtained his MSc, later earning a PhD from Trinity College Dublin for his thesis on uniform numerical methods for problems with initial boundary layers, which was published and translated into Russian and Chinese. Following an extensive career at Philips, including roles in both the Mathematical Software Group and the Applied Mathematics Group, he has involved himself in advanced scientific computing research and directed projects within TU/e.
