Biography

Dr. Wiley Chung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Queen's University, specializing in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Dr. Chung completed his medical degree in 2009, followed by a General Surgery Residency at the University of Toronto where he was Valedictorian. He further honed his skills by completing a Thoracic Surgery Residency at the University of Calgary in 2016 and a Master's degree in Health Professions Education at Queen's University. Dr. Chung has an illustrious career and has served as the sole esophageal surgeon for the South East Ontario Health Region from 2016 to 2022. He established the Esophagogastric Diagnostic Assessment Program at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and has played a pivotal role in shaping esophageal cancer management in the region. His leadership extends to various committees, including the Thoracic Cancers Advisory Committee and the Quality Improvement Patient Safety Committee. In 2023, he assumed the role of Director of Interprofessional Education, fostering collaboration between schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Rehabilitation Therapy, and launched the MD Program Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigeneity Committee. Dr. Chung has received multiple awards, including the Southeastern Academic Medical Organization Endowed Scholarship and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology. His research utilizes diverse methodologies to explore outcomes in surgical treatments and team dynamics in operating rooms, always aiming to enhance patient care delivery and educational practices in medicine.
