Biography

Wilhelm Magner is an Assistant Professor of Viola at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin. He has been awarded the Prix d'Europe and has recently engaged in solo performances across Canada, the United States, and Poland for the 2023-2024 season, which includes recitals and chamber music concerts. He is dedicated to expanding the viola repertoire and has transcribed works by renowned composers such as Bach, Lutoslawski, Paganini, and Waxman. In addition to performing, he offers masterclasses throughout the USA and Canada. Magner holds a Master’s degree in Viola Performance from Yale University and has also studied under prestigious instructors at McGill University. He was named in CBC Music’s “30 under 30” list in 2022 and has participated in several notable summer festivals including Yellowbarn, Gstaad hin Festival, Kneisel Hall, and the Young Artists Program at the National Arts Center. In his spare time, he enjoys playing chess and listening to music, and he is a recipient of the Sylva Gelber Foundation award. Magner performs with a Ryan Soltis viola and a Nelson 2023 viola Ouchard bow, generously loaned by CANIMEX INC. from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada.
