Biography

Professor Herrington is a clinician scientist based at Oxford Population Health and practices as an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Oxford Kidney Unit. He jointly leads the Renal Studies Group and joined in 2010 as a Clinical Research Fellow, trained in landmark renal trials such as SHARP and the 3C study. He is the Chief Investigator of the EASi-KIDNEY trial, which tested the effects of empagliflozin versus placebo on cardiorenal outcomes in 6609 people with chronic kidney disease and diabetes. His research interests primarily focus on trial methodology and the key determinants of the development and progression of kidney disease, utilizing observations from large blood-based prospective cohorts across diverse populations. He has a particular focus on adiposity-related risk factors and their interrelation with cardiovascular disease, as well as on novel urine biomarkers to assess treatment effects and predict progression.
