Biography

Will Kymlicka is a prominent Canadian philosopher specializing in political philosophy. He has published nine books and over 200 articles, which have been translated into 32 languages. Kymlicka's primary research interests include issues of democracy, diversity, citizenship models, and social justice in multicultural societies. He is known for significant works such as 'Contemporary Political Philosophy' (OUP 1990; edition 2002) and 'Multicultural Citizenship' (OUP 1995), the latter of which has garnered several awards including the Macpherson Prize from the Canadian Political Science Association. In 2013, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Copenhagen, followed by another from KU Leuven in 2014. His work 'Multicultural Odysseys: Navigating New International Politics of Diversity' (OUP 2007) won the North American Society for Social Philosophy’s Book Award in 2007. Kymlicka is co-author of 'Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights' with Sue Donaldson, which was awarded the Canadian Philosophical Association’s Book Prize in 2013. His academic contributions extend to research group leadership and co-direction of programs at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. In 2021, he received the Pierre Chauveau Medal from the Royal Society of Canada, and in 2023, he was appointed to the Order of Canada.
