Dr. Willem Bouwens

Biography

Willem Bouwens is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated since 2006. Initially serving as a professor of Social Law, he transitioned to a professor of Labour Law in November 2019. He earned his doctorate in 1996 from Radboud University Nijmegen with a dissertation entitled 'Maintenance Obligation and Assistance: An Investigation into the Relationship between Government Care and Maintenance by Family Members'. His research focuses primarily on labor law and social security law. Bouwens is a notable figure in the academic community, contributing to essential legal texts, including the standard work 'Van der Grinten Arbeidsovereenkomstenrecht' and writing chapters for 'Bakels' Schets van het Nederlandse arbeidsrecht'. He has held editorial positions for renowned journals and co-founded the open access journal 'Academie voor Arbeidsrecht'. His involvement in various legal committees includes serving as a chairman of dispute resolution committees and as a deputy judge. He was also the Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2015 to 2019 and is engaged in several collaborative research programs. His teaching encompasses both bachelor and master courses, and he actively participates in faculty governance and examination processes.
