Biography

Willem Verhoeven specializes in early-modern intellectual history, focusing on the history of philosophy during the Enlightenment and the role of Enlightenment ideas in modern political and intellectual debates. He is currently pursuing research interests in American Pragmatism, particularly examining theories of truth and accounts of democratic politics as proposed by thinkers such as John Dewey, Henry James, Richard Rorty, and Hilary Putnam. Originally trained as a historian at Utrecht University, Willem obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Philosophy at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in 2020. After a brief period of lecturing at RUG, he initially chose to pursue a career outside of academia. However, in 2024, Willem decided to resume his academic career by joining the Political History section at Utrecht University as a lecturer. Currently, he is reworking his PhD thesis entitled 'Reasoning Morality: Empirical Turn Early-Modern Philosophy' for book publication.
