Biography

Willem Wildering is an Associate Professor and a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary. He holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences and an M.S. in Pharmacology Behavioral Physiology, both from the University of Groningen, and a Ph.D. in Physiology/Neurobiology from the Free University of Amsterdam. His research focuses primarily on cellular and molecular mechanisms of neuronal aging and neurodegeneration, particularly in the context of neurotoxicology and the effects of aquatic pollutants. His work has been published extensively, contributing to the understanding of neuronal excitability declines due to aging, and the inflammatory processes affecting memory dysfunction in gastropods. Wildering's research aims to uncover the underlying neurobiological processes that lead to age-associated cognitive decline, with the goal of informing potential therapeutic strategies. He teaches courses related to evolutionary perspectives in neurobiology, among other subjects.
