Biography

William Bendena is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology at Queen's University. His research is primarily focused on molecular physiology and behavior, using the microscopic worm C. elegans as a model organism. He applies molecular genetic techniques to manipulate signaling molecules, such as neuropeptides and neurotransmitter receptors, within the nervous system. His investigations into single protein alterations have shown changes in locomotion, sensory perception, and metabolism, drawing parallels to human diseases such as epilepsy, narcolepsy, and obesity. Additionally, he teaches various courses, including a second-year Genetics course and a fourth-year 'Current Topics in Molecular Biology' course, and he trains students in a senior thesis course. He has also taught cross-appointed courses in Neuroscience, 'Developmental Biology', and an 'Aquaculture Field Course' in Thailand. Bendena's research interests encompass crustacean endocrinology, developmental pattern formation, genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics.
