Biography

William Bertozzi is a recognized world leader and innovator in the field of experimental electromagnetic nuclear physics. He is the principal investigator leading the Nuclear Interactions Group at the MIT Laboratory for Nuclear Science. His research program investigates the structure of nucleons and nuclei using high-energy electrons and photon probes. Experiments are conducted at accelerator facilities such as the MIT Bates Linear Accelerator Center, the University of Mainz, and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory. His work focuses on understanding electromagnetic interactions responsible for reactions that lead to a deeper understanding of the forces between nucleons, the nucleus, and quarks. Key topics of study include non-spherical components of nucleons, the character of forces within nucleons, and the origins of spin and angular momentum in nucleons. Bertozzi has developed novel instrumental modalities for particle detection and precision tracking, as well as particle polarimetry and cryogenic targetry. He emphasizes the importance of research in graduate education and encourages undergraduate participation. Throughout his career, he has invented NRFI technology and founded and developed the Bates Linear Accelerator Center. Bertozzi has served in various leadership roles and is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
