Biography

William Boos' research focuses on fluid dynamics in Earth’s tropical atmosphere, with an emphasis on monsoon circulations that deliver water to billions of socially vulnerable people and agricultural economies. He explores the importance of monsoon rainfall and has established theories that explain observed variability in monsoons, as well as the disparate predictions made by climate models about future changes in monsoon rainfall over the next century. His work pays particular attention to the treatment of phase changes in water as a result of precipitation, and the interaction between precipitation and planetary-scale flow, which are two central unresolved problems in tropical meteorology. To achieve this, William combines theoretical frameworks, observational analyses, and numerical models, utilizing computationally intensive, high-resolution simulations to explicitly represent precipitating atmospheric convection.
