Biography

William Brook is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. His research focuses on developmental biology, specifically investigating the genetic and biochemical pathways that mediate cell interactions and control proper patterns of limb development. Using the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as a model organism, he studies organ development, patterns of cell division, cell death, and differentiation. His work examines how local cell interactions coordinate the global pattern of limb development, with particular emphasis on how morphogen gradients influence embryonic limb cells' responses. Additionally, his research explores the role of transcription factors in heart development, including identifying genes known to cause congenital heart diseases. Brook's lab aims to uncover novel genetic interactions influencing vertebrate development and their links to human diseases.
