Biography

William Edwards Bynum is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke University, where he has been since October 2017. He provides outpatient primary care to patients in the Durham region and educates family medicine residents, medical students, and physician assistant students. Bynum also serves as the Associate Program Director of the Duke Family Medicine Residency. His clinical and educational efforts are complemented by his research into self-conscious emotions such as shame, guilt, and pride in medical learners, which he presents through numerous seminars and workshops. Before joining Duke, Bynum served seven years in the active duty Air Force, where he held faculty positions at the Fort Belvoir Family Medicine Residency and participated in various congressional delegations as a traveling physician. Bynum is passionate about fostering supportive and psychologically safe learning environments in medical education. He earned his M.D. from the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine in 2010.
