William R. Jr. Callen, born in Selma, Alabama, obtained his A.B. in Physics from Princeton University in 1965, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 1967 and 1971, respectively. He has been a faculty member at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology since 1970. Over his tenure, he has co-authored the text 'An Introduction to Lasers and Applications' and taught a wide array of courses including lasers, electro-optics, circuits, digital and analog electronics, materials, machinery, systems, and electromagnetics. He developed a unique course titled 'Electrical Engineering and American Society,' which he jointly taught with faculty from the School of History, Technology, and Society. Additionally, he was responsible for teaching short courses on preparation for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams. In his leisure time, Callen enjoys swimming and canoeing. His research interests include engineering educational methods and the integration of engineering with the humanities. He has received various distinctions, including the NASA Certificate of Recognition for Laser Scanning System in 1984 and the Engineer of the Year Education award in Metro-Atlanta in 1989, among others.
