Dr. William Chan

Biography

William Chan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Monash University and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Melbourne. He is a consultant interventional cardiologist and clinician-investigator, holding public appointments at Alfred, Western, and Sunshine Hospitals while closely affiliated with the BakerIDI Heart Diabetes Institute. He has received the prestigious NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, which has enabled him to conduct significant clinical research in cardiology. Dr. Chan supervises PhD fellows and is actively involved in clinical research. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne and underwent advanced cardiology training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. His PhD was focused on acute myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial disease at the BakerIDI Heart Diabetes Institute. He is particularly interested in complex coronary artery revascularization procedures for patients with heart failure who cannot undergo conventional surgeries due to high-risk comorbidities. He has expertise in performing complex procedures such as stenting and rotational atherectomy, and diagnosing conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Chan's research contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly relating to health and well-being, as he aims to improve patient outcomes in cardiovascular health.
