Biography

William Collins is an internationally recognized expert in climate modeling and climate change science. He is the Associate Laboratory Director for the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Collins has held the position of director of the Climate Ecosystem Sciences Division from 2015 to 2022. He is a Professor of Residence in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley, since 2006. Collins has been honored as a Fellow of notable organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Physical Society (APS), American Geophysical Union (AGU), and American Meteorological Society (AMS). He received the DOE Secretarial Honor Award for launching the DOE’s Accelerated Climate Model Energy in 2015. Furthermore, he has been a Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2006 and has served in various leadership roles at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Collins played a significant role as a Lead Coordinating Lead Author for the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and contributed as a Lead Author to the Fifth and Collaborating Author to the Fourth IPCC Assessments, with the IPCC receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
