William Cookson is a Professor of Genomic Medicine at Imperial College London, trained as a respiratory physician and epidemiologist with a D.Phil. in human genetics from Oxford, obtained in 1994. He served as a Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Oxford from 1998 to 2004. A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cookson's primary research interests include the causes of asthma, the lung microbiome, and the genomics of lung and pleural cancer. He has made significant contributions to understanding the genetic factors in asthma and has played a major role in the multinational GABRIEL consortium identifying the impact of genes and environment on asthma in Europe. His current research explores the interactions of environmental factors with genomic data to aid in the prevention of respiratory diseases. He is particularly focused on the airway microbiome and its correlation with conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancer, striving to understand immune responses and to discover new therapeutic targets for thoracic malignancies.
